JoJo Makhanda highlights the critical issue of Makhanda’s persistent water crisis and the health measures that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the heart of the project is the transformative power of JoJo tanks, representing hope and resilience within the community. The JoJo Tank and Hand Sanitizer are personified, taking on the role of protagonists in a narrative that reflects the experiences of Rhodes University residents. These residents have had to fetch water using purple buckets from JoJo or Eco Water tanks to meet their daily needs, such as showering and doing laundry.
Drawing inspiration from the 2024 South African election campaign posters, these artworks are reimagined to stress the influence of political leaders’ decisions on essential resources like water. Through this transformation, the posters serve as a commentary on the direct impact of leadership choices on the community’s well-being and access to vital resources during times of crisis.
