Ikasi Lam:
An archive of black lived experiences.

by Azile Cibi

My artwork uses different elements such as IsiPantsula, Kwaito music, and the poetic Tsotsi taal as a vehicle to tell unique Township stories about how the majority of Black South Africans are living. It takes a critical view of social, political and cultural issues in South African Townships, combining these themes into installations that feature photographs, juxtaposed with objects and text, to provide clues to content and interpretation. While I use a variety of materials and processes in this body of work my methodology is consistent. Each material contributes to the body of work to encourage audience participation.
